Race and Cultural Diversity Counselling

Discrimination causes real psychological harm

Any kind of discrimination based on gender, race, or sexual orientation can massively impact mental health and wellbeing. The effects are not imagined, not an overreaction, and not something you simply move on from. They are serious, they accumulate over time, and they require a therapeutic response that takes that seriously.

My practice focuses on providing culturally competent and anti-oppressive therapy that acknowledges the impact of race, culture, ethnicity, and sexual orientation on mental health. I do not ask you to set those parts of yourself aside in order to do the work. They are central to it.

It is not your fault

One of the first things I do when working with clients who have experienced discrimination is validate their feelings and help them understand clearly that what happened to them is not their fault.

From there, we explore your own cultural background and how it influences your world view, your relationships, and your mental health within your own cultural setting. This is not a one-size-fits-all approach. It is built around you.

My approach

Culturally competent therapy means I do not treat your background as incidental. It is part of the work from the very beginning.

01

Validate

I begin by acknowledging your lived reality. Your feelings are not an overreaction. What you have experienced is real, it has had an impact, and you deserve to have that recognised without having to argue for it.

02

Explore your cultural context

We look at your own cultural background and how it shapes your world view, your relationships, and your mental health. This is not a generic process. It is built around your specific experience and identity.

03

Work through the impact

Together we address the psychological harm that discrimination causes, whether that is anxiety, depression, identity confusion, anger, grief, or something else entirely. We do not rush this part.

04

Move toward empowerment

The goal is not just to manage symptoms but to help you find ways to address what is happening in your life and feel empowered to move forward on your own terms, with greater agency and self-understanding.

Who this is for

This space is for anyone who has experienced discrimination based on race, ethnicity, culture, gender, or sexual orientation, whether that was a single significant incident or a lifetime of accumulated experiences that have never been properly addressed.

It is for people who have tried talking to others and found that those around them could not fully understand. For people who have felt they had to explain too much just to be believed. For people who are exhausted by carrying something heavy alone.

You do not need to minimise what happened, or frame it carefully, or worry about how it will land. This is a space where your experience is the starting point, not something to be debated.
