Climate change, war, political instability, the erosion of trust in institutions. A growing number of people feel profound dread, helplessness, and grief about what is happening around them. These feelings are real, they are valid, and they are something we can work through together.

Even counsellors like myself experience profound fear about the times we are living through. War, ecocide, poverty, climate change, the suffering caused by opportunist politicians, the unchecked power of technology, the failure of systems that were supposed to protect us. News outlets and social media fill me with dread, and I sometimes feel powerless and fearful for my children and for humanity as a whole.
Dystopia Therapy is a space to use therapy to help people deal with their very real worries and fears about the state of the world, and what this means for the generations to come. It is not about dismissing those fears. It is about learning to hold them without being paralysed by them.
What brings people to this kind of therapy is not weakness or catastrophising. It is a rational response to genuinely difficult circumstances. The goal of our work together is not to convince you that everything is fine. It is to help you move from helpless, anxious, and overwhelmed to grounded, informed, and active.
You are not alone in feeling this way. Many millions across the world share these fears. Part of the work is helping you find that sense of shared company rather than isolation.
The experiences people bring to Dystopia Therapy are wide-ranging. Here are some of the most common.
A deep, ongoing fear about the future of the planet, grief for what has already been lost, and the particular anguish of worrying what kind of world your children will inherit.
A sense of betrayal, powerlessness, and anger at systems and leaders that feel increasingly indifferent to ordinary people. The exhaustion of caring about things that feel beyond your control.
The compulsive pull toward news and social media, and the toll it takes. Knowing it is making things worse but finding it impossible to stop. A nervous system that cannot settle.
Feeling so overwhelmed by the scale of what is happening that taking any action feels pointless. A kind of frozen state where the size of the problem makes everything feel futile.
Persistent worry about what is coming, for yourself, your children, and the people you love. An inability to feel safe or settled even when things in your immediate life are okay.
Feeling like the people around you do not share your level of concern, or have simply stopped engaging with it. The loneliness of caring deeply in a world that often looks the other way.
This is the framework I use in Dystopia Therapy. It does not minimise what is happening in the world. It helps you find a way to live within it without being swallowed by it.
We begin by giving your fears proper space. Not rushing past them, not reframing them away, not offering false reassurance. What you are feeling gets heard in full, without judgement.
I normalise your response and acknowledge that what you are feeling is based on real events, not imagined ones. You are not overreacting. You are having a very human response to an objectively difficult set of circumstances.
We work on moving from doom and gloom scenarios toward something more sustainable. Not denial, but a rebalancing. Learning to acknowledge the fear without letting it dominate your entire existence.
Finding what you can actually control and focusing energy there. Whether that is practical self-care, community involvement, or simply setting clearer limits around news consumption, action replaces paralysis.
Alongside the deeper therapeutic work, I help clients develop concrete strategies for managing their relationship with world events. These are not about burying your head in the sand. They are about protecting your capacity to keep functioning and caring over the long term.
You cannot pour from an empty cup. Taking care of yourself in these times is not a luxury. It is what makes continued engagement, activism, and parenting possible.
Working on your relationship with news and social media, including addressing doomscrolling and building habits that keep you informed without keeping you in a permanent state of distress.
A structured approach to containing anxiety so it does not bleed into every part of your day. Giving fear a designated space rather than letting it occupy all of them.
Practical methods for managing panic, overwhelm, and the physical symptoms of anxiety in the moment. Tools you can use when things feel unmanageable.
Attending to sleep, movement, and basic wellbeing as a foundation for everything else. Not as a distraction from what matters, but as what makes sustained engagement possible.
That is the direction of travel we work toward together. Not a place where the world's problems no longer affect you. Not false optimism or enforced positivity. But a place where you can hold what is real without being paralysed by it.
Living with eco-anxiety and political despair does not have to mean being consumed by them. It is possible to stay informed, to care deeply, and to still find moments of meaning, connection, and even joy. That is what we are working toward.
